Bulk Hair for K-Tip and I-Tip Production: Keratin and Copper Options

Bulk Hair for K-Tip and I-Tip Production: Keratin and Copper Options

If you’re making K-tips or I-tips for salons, the loose hair you buy decides almost everything before the bond ever gets formed. We see a lot of buyers focus only on keratin color or copper tube size, then get bitten by hair that sheds, tangles, or doesn’t take dye the way the sample did.

This is a practical look at what bulk hair should be for those two product lines, where the costs hide, and what I’d specify before placing a production order.

Start with the hair, not the bond

For K-tip and I-tip work, you need clean, aligned bulk hair with cuticles running the same direction. Remy matters, but don’t treat that word like proof; I’ve seen factory labels say Remy while the batch had mixed roots and tips, which means matting after a few washes. Better to ask for donor source, steam-process details, hair grade, and whether the batch can be matched across lengths.

Most production starts at 100 grams per color and length, though many factories have MOQs around 500 grams for custom shades. If you’re testing a new menu, 18 to 22 inches moves fastest, while 24 to 28 inches costs more and usually has more natural variation.

You can browse bulk hair by texture first, then lock the shade with samples. For color-heavy orders, our guidance on color ring approvals can save you from approving a pretty ring and receiving a mismatched bulk run.

K-tip production: keratin is part of the cost

K-tips use pre-shaped or factory-applied keratin bonds, usually U-shaped or cylindrical, and they’re installed with heat. The bond should melt cleanly, hold without being crumbly, and match common application temperatures around 170–180°C; if it’s too soft, oils and heat styling can break it down faster.

A standard strand is often 0.8 to 1 gram, and a full install commonly uses 125 to 175 grams depending on density and length. Keratin colors usually run clear/natural, dark brown, black, and sometimes blonde, but bond color is less about appearance after install and more about not showing at the root.

The downside is labor. Applying tips in-house means weighing hair, controlling tip length, trimming cuticles at the bond area, and keeping every bond consistent. If you already sell finished extensions, compare our K-tip hair landed cost against your labor before assuming in-house tipping is cheaper.

I-tip production: copper tubes change the math

I-tips don’t require heat during installation because the rolled tip is clamped inside a copper tube, bead, or silicone-lined micro link. The hair still needs a secure binding at the tip, usually glued and wrapped or compressed, and the finished tip has to fit the tube without being forced.

Tube size is where people mess up. A common copper tube is around 3.0–3.5 mm outside diameter, but your actual inner diameter, wall thickness, and tip size need to match; a tight fit frays the hair, while a loose fit slips after shampooing.

Copper is reusable in theory, but in real salon use beads can bend, lose grip, or collect product buildup. The hair may be reusable for several moves, but don’t promise clients that every tube will last the full lifespan.

What to put on your sample spec sheet

Before mass production, I’d sample the exact length, texture, color, bond type, and strand weight you plan to sell. Don’t approve a 20-inch straight sample and then expect the same feel in 26-inch body wave; longer hair naturally has more variation and often a slightly thinner end.

  • Hair origin and donor type, such as Chinese, Indian, or Vietnamese raw/steam-processed hair
  • Cuticle direction and whether the batch is single drawn, double drawn, or super double drawn
  • Length in inches, measured pulled straight, with weight per bundle or per bag
  • Color number or ring swatch, including root tone and highlight ratio
  • K-tip keratin color, bond length, and strand weight in grams
  • I-tip diameter, copper tube size, and whether silicone-lined beads will be used
  • Lead time for samples, mass production, and custom color or texture runs

For fusion work, the same sourcing logic overlaps with U-tip manufacturing; our article on U-tip bulk sourcing covers bond consistency and batch control in more detail. Expect samples to take 3–7 days for stock hair and 2–5 weeks for custom colors or made tips, depending on the factory schedule.

Price tiers, margins, and honest tradeoffs

Cheaper bulk hair can work for beginner kits or one-time event hair, but it’s risky for a salon brand selling reinstalls. Short hair mixed into the bundle, weak cuticles, and overly processed ends show up faster in tipped strands because clients wear them for months and wash them repeatedly.

Double drawn hair costs more because it has more hair from root to tip, giving a fuller result below the shoulders. If your clients mostly buy 14–18 inches, single drawn may be enough; past 22 inches, the thickness difference becomes obvious and returns usually start with “the ends feel thin.”

Also price the consumables honestly: keratin glue, copper tubes, clamping tools, labeling, QC labor, and waste from broken tips all eat margin. If tipping in-house ties up your best stylists for hours, finished goods or semi-finished tips may be the smarter move, even if the per-gram price looks higher.

Should I make K-tips or I-tips from the same bulk hair?

Yes, the same bulk hair can often be used for both if the quality, length, and cuticle alignment are consistent. Just remember the finishing process is different, so approve separate samples for the keratin bond and the copper-tube fit instead of assuming one sample proves both.

How much bulk hair should a new brand order?

Start with one neutral color family and three lengths, such as natural black or dark brown in 18, 20, and 22 inches. A practical test run is often 300–500 grams per style, enough to make samples, do install tests, and catch issues before committing to a larger production run.
