DDP Shipping for Hair Extensions: Landing Cost Made Simple
DDP shipping for hair extensions sounds boring until a $1,200 weft order shows up with a $380 customs bill you didn’t plan for. We see that happen more than it should. Here’s how landed pricing actually works, what the supplier should handle, and when you’re better off controlling import yourself.
DDP shipping for hair extensions, in plain English
DDP means delivered duty paid. In a real door-to-door quote, the supplier handles export clearance, freight, US customs entry, duties, fees, and final delivery from our warehouse to your door. You pay one landed price instead of getting a broker bill later.
The label alone isn’t enough. Some sellers quote DDP but only cover freight to a US port. Confirm the Incoterms version and who acts as importer of record before paying.
Hair is light but bulky. A 20-inch bundle is about 100 grams, or 3.5 ounces. Two hundred bundles are only around 20 kg, but 24 to 26 inch lengths fill a carton fast. Carriers bill actual or dimensional weight, whichever is higher.
How your landed cost is built
Landed cost is every expense required to get sellable hair into your hands.
- Product: bundles, closures, frontals, tags, and packaging.
- Freight: air, express, or ocean, including dimensional-weight charges.
- Import costs: duties, processing fees, broker entry fee, and bond costs when required.
- Last mile: residential, liftgate, remote-area, or correction charges.
Those fees are built into a DDP quote, not gone. Ocean moves often have a 0.125% harbor maintenance fee, broker entries commonly run $125 to $250, and a continuous bond may cost $150 to $500. Air usually skips harbor maintenance but still has broker charges.
Under-declaring goods to lower duty isn’t a favor. Customs can hold the shipment and delay your launch. Ask for an accurate invoice and written door-to-door scope.
Air versus ocean: real timelines and rates
Most new buyers use air or express DDP. After production, door-to-door transit often runs 7 to 12 business days, with all-in rates around $8 to $14 per kg. Minimum charges mean small cartons don’t price at exact weight times rate.
Ocean DDP is slower but cheaper at volume. Door-to-door timing is commonly 35 to 50 days, with rates around $3 to $6 per kg before minimums. For 50 kg or more of bulky bulk hair for braiding, planning ahead pays off. If you need weft hair within three weeks, air is safer.
Production is separate. Stock shades may ship in days; custom labels or large raw-hair orders can take 7 to 20 days before freight starts.
DDP or DAP: which makes sense?
DDP gives you a known price and almost no customs homework. DAP means the supplier delivers to the named place, but you clear customs and pay duties and fees. With a good broker, DAP can sometimes save 5% to 15%, but you own the paperwork.
We keep a fuller DDP vs DAP terms comparison if you want the mechanics. If you ship single customer orders instead of cartons, our article on drop-shipping hair extensions explains where that model fails. A true DDP quote includes duty; if customs bills you directly, it isn’t DDP. Compare grams and quality; a cheap quote can hide thinner bundles or mixed hair. Get loss claims in writing.
Quick FAQ
Is DDP always more expensive?
No. Suppliers may get better freight rates through volume, but they can also add markup. Compare full landed price per bundle or per gram.
Who is the importer on a DDP order?
In true DDP, the seller or their agent handles entry. US partners may still ask for your EIN and delivery details. If a supplier can’t say who files entry, don’t treat the price as DDP.
How do I compare two DDP quotes?
Match hair type, length, bundle grams, quantity, packaging, shipping mode, address, and production time, then request each door-to-door total. A lower quote may exclude duty, use lower-grade hair, or allow a longer transit window.
Next time, don’t ask only for price per bundle. Ask for total landed cost to your door, with shipping mode and timing included. Check our FAQ for current ordering details, then send your item list, quantity, and delivery window. We’ll quote air or ocean DDP honestly—and tell you if DAP would save you money.
