From Bulk Hair to Tape-Ins: Conversion Yields Every Factory Knows
If you’ve ever done the math on converting bulk hair to tape-ins only to come up short on finished packs, you’re not the first buyer to make that math mistake. We see this every month in our warehouse, when new vendors send over POs that assume 100% of raw bulk hair makes it straight to finished tape-ins, no waste, no trimmings, no rejects. The truth is every factory works with fixed, predictable conversion yields, and knowing those numbers will keep you from underordering, overpromising to your clients, or eating into your profit on every batch.
First, let’s stop pretending 100% of bulk hair is usable
Let’s get this out of the way first: real human hair isn’t a plastic product extruded to perfect, uniform specs. When we pull a 1kg batch of 20 inch virgin bulk hair off the shelf to run a tape-in order, the first thing our production team does is spread it out on the sorting table to pick out strands that are too short, too fine, or damaged at the ends. Those strands don’t make the cut for tape-ins. A strand that’s only 12 inches long in a batch of 20 inch hair will never seal properly in a tape tab, and it will shed out within a week of a client’s first wash. If you’re still getting the hang of sourcing raw hair directly, our guide to buying bulk human hair directly walks through how we grade incoming batches before processing starts, so you know what quality tier you’re actually paying for. Even with top-tier, cuticle-aligned donor hair, you lose roughly 10% of the raw weight right there in the initial sort, before any tape ever touches a strand.
The real yield numbers for bulk hair to tape-ins, by length
We track these numbers on every production run, so these aren’t generic marketing estimates. Yield drops as length goes up, for a simple reason: longer hair has more tapered ends, more natural breakage from donor daily wear, and a higher bar for length consistency to look good installed. Below is the quick reference we use for our own production planning, based on premium cuticle-aligned hair processed to standard 2.5g tape tabs:
- 14-16 inch tape-ins: 83-85% yield, least waste thanks to fewer broken or tapered ends
- 18-20 inch tape-ins: 78-82% yield, our highest volume SKU, stocked by most salons year-round
- 22-24 inch tape-ins: 70-75% yield, more reject strands from natural end taper
- 26+ inch tape-ins: 65-68% yield, the highest waste category by far
These numbers shift a little if you’re working with lower-grade non-remy bulk, too. Non-remy hair has cuticles facing every direction, which causes more matting during washing and detangling, so expect another 5-7% loss across all lengths as teams pick out matted clumps that can’t be salvaged for tape tabs.
Small custom requests that quietly tank your yield
A lot of buyers don’t realize tiny tweaks to their tape-in specs can eat into yield fast, adding unexpected cost if you don’t plan for it. If you request slimmer 1.5g tape tabs instead of the standard 2.5g, for example, you’ll lose another 3-4% of hair to edge trimmings, because you have to cut each sealed tab narrower to hit your target weight. Double-process blonde shades? Expect another 5% loss from breakage during lifting, even when we use low-volume developer and bond protectant to minimize damage. We had a buyer last quarter who insisted every strand in his tape tabs be exactly the listed 20 inch length, no exceptions. That sounds reasonable on paper, but even the best donor hair has natural slight length variation, so his yield dropped to 61% — he ordered 10kg of bulk expecting 9.5kg of finished tape-ins, ended up with just over 6kg, and lost almost $1,200 in extra hair he hadn’t budgeted for. If you’re comparing quotes for finished tape in hair extensions across suppliers, ask for net hair weight, not total pack weight including tape and packaging. A standard 50g tape-in pack has roughly 7g of tape and release liner, so a factory counting that as hair weight can quote a suspiciously high yield while shorting you on actual hair.
Why some factories quote 90%+ yields (they’re cutting corners)
Have you ever gotten a quote that sounded too good to be true? Chances are, the supplier was fudging their yield numbers. If a supplier tells you they convert bulk hair to tape-ins at 90%+ yield across all lengths, walk away. They’re cutting one of two corners, both of which leave you with unhappy clients. First, they skip the sort step, leaving short, broken strands in tabs that shed out after one or two washes, leaving clients with thin extensions weeks after install. Second, they weigh tape, adhesive, and packaging as “hair” weight, which makes yields look great on paper but means you get 10-15% less actual hair per pack than you paid for. We’ve had buyers come to us after ordering from these suppliers, upset about shedding complaints, and it always traces back to that fake math. If you’re mapping out lead times and MOQs for custom runs, our ordering FAQ lays out standard timelines for stock and custom orders so you don’t get stuck waiting on product when clients book installs.
Quick answers to the yield questions we get every week
How much extra bulk should I order to hit my tape-in target?
As a rule of thumb, add 20% to your target finished weight for lengths 20 inch and under, 30% for 22-24 inch, and 35% for 26 inch and longer. If you’re doing double-process blonde or vivid custom colors, add another 5% on top to cover color-related breakage. Don’t cut it close. It’s way cheaper to order an extra half kilo of bulk upfront than to pay rush shipping on a small top-up order mid-production, or short your own customers because you ran out of hair mid-run.
What happens to all the trimmed, leftover hair?
We don’t throw out usable hair unless it’s broken or matted beyond repair. The short, uniform strands pulled out during sorting work great for k-tip refills, root touch-up pieces, or small braiding packs for feed-in styles. Most regular buyers ask us to bag these leftover shorts and send them with their finished tape-in order for free, to have extra stock for small client requests. It cuts our waste, and gives you free extra product to sell or use for touch-ups — a win for everyone.
Conversion yields aren’t some secret factory trick to charge you more. They’re just the reality of working with real human hair, which grows on real people, not in a factory mold. We share these numbers with every new buyer because we hate when someone gets a shipment and realizes they don’t have enough product to fill orders, or that their margins are thinner than planned from unplanned waste. If you’re ready to price out a bulk order for your own tape-in production, or want a quote for finished tape-ins straight from our line, just reach out. We’ll walk you through the math for your specs so there are no surprises when your order lands.
