How Many Tape-In Extensions Do You Need?

How Many Tape-In Extensions Do You Need?

If you’ve ever Googled how many tape-in extensions you need mid-panic, 10 minutes before your client walks in the door, you’re not alone. We see this every week in our warehouse—new salon owners and even seasoned stylists guess on counts instead of using the real, on-the-chair math we’ve picked up over years of shipping orders across the US. There’s no one universal number, but there are hard baselines you can use to stop wasting inventory, avoid rush shipping fees, and leave every client with a natural, full look.

Start with the baseline, not the influencer reel

Scroll any hair-focused social platform for 10 minutes, and you’ll see a creator claiming every single client only needs one pack of tape-ins, or that 3 packs is non-negotiable no matter what. Both takes are wrong. The standard tape-in weft we stock is 1.5 inches wide, 2.5 grams per piece, with 20 wefts (50 total grams) per pack. That baseline of 20 wefts works for exactly one scenario: fine, thin hair at shoulder length or longer that only wants subtle thickness, no added length.

Pile more than that on fine hair, and the tape tabs won’t have enough natural hair to anchor to. You’ll get calls two weeks later about slipping wefts, or worse, tiny tension breakage spots where the tabs pulled too hard on delicate strands. Too few, and you’ll see obvious gaps between wefts the second the client pulls their hair up into a ponytail.

Length adds change the count fast

If your client is coming in with a chin-length bob asking for 22-inch mermaid length, that single baseline pack won’t cut it. You need enough wefts to hide that blunt, short end line so there’s no awkward “shelf” where their natural hair stops and extensions start. For fine hair adding 4-6 inches of length, plan for 30-40 wefts (75-100 grams, or 1.5 to 2 packs). For medium texture hair, that jumps to 40-50 wefts (100-125 grams) to cover blunt ends and add enough density so the long lengths don’t look stringy. If you’re working with super thick, coarse natural hair that’s already past shoulder length and wants 24+ inch length? You’re looking at 60 wefts minimum, 150 grams total, so the extensions match the density of their root area instead of looking like thin, sparse add-ons.

All of the counts I’m sharing here are based on the standard 2.5g per weft weight we use for our tape-in hair, so adjust up if you’re using thinner, budget wefts that only weigh 1.5-2g each. Those cheaper wefts might look like a deal up front, but you’ll need 30-50% more pieces to get the same volume, which erases any cost savings fast.

Texture and density matter more than total hair length

I’ve had stylists call panicking because they ordered 2 packs for a client with 18-inch hair, only to realize the client has dense 3c/4a coils that take twice as many wefts to blend without gaps. Don’t rely on length alone to pick your count. Always do a quick ponytail test before you quote a price or place an order: pull the client’s natural hair into a tight, low ponytail and measure the circumference. Fine hair will measure less than 2 inches around, and falls on the lowest end of every count range. Medium density hair, which makes up about 70% of most stylists’ client lists, measures 2-3 inches around, and lands right in the middle of our count ranges. Thick or coarse hair, including tight curl patterns, measures over 3 inches around, and you’ll want to add 10-15 extra wefts to whatever initial number you calculated.

If you’re consistently working with clients who have extremely fragile, fine breakage around the hairline, you might even compare options to see if flat tip vs tape-in is a better fit for those hard-to-cover spots, since flat tips put less tension on delicate strands. Never place tape tabs directly on broken, baby-fine hairs along the hairline — that’s a one-way ticket to more breakage and an unhappy client.

The mistake that costs you 30% more per order

We see this every single week. A stylist calculates an exact count for a client, places an order for exactly that many wefts, then hits a snag mid-install. Maybe two wefts have slightly misaligned tape from the factory. Maybe the client mentions halfway through they want extra face-framing thickness. Maybe they accidentally crumple a tab while placing it and can’t use that weft. Then they’re paying $40+ in rush shipping to get 10 extra wefts overnight, which adds 30% or more to their total order cost.

The fix is simple: keep a small backup stock of your most requested shades (usually 1b, 2, 4, and 613) on hand at the salon. You don’t need to drop thousands on bulk inventory right out the gate. Even 10 extra wefts per core shade will cover last-minute adjustments without tying up too much cash. Unused wefts don’t go bad, either — as long as you leave the tape backing on and store them in a cool, dry spot away from direct sun, they’ll hold up for 18 months or more. You can find full details on our order minimums and stock turnaround times on our FAQ page if you’re mapping out your first stock order.

How many tape-in extensions do you need? No fancy math required

These counts are for standard 2.5g wefts, installed ¼ inch from the scalp with no double-stacking, for clients who want a natural, full look without over-the-top volume.

  • Fine hair, no length add, just thickness (12-16 inch natural hair): 20 wefts / 50g
  • Fine hair, adding 4+ inches of length: 30-40 wefts / 75-100g
  • Medium density hair, thickness only, no length add: 30 wefts / 75g
  • Medium density hair, adding length up to 22 inches: 40-50 wefts / 100-125g
  • Thick/coarse hair, any length add over 2 inches: 50-60 wefts / 125-150g

If you prefer the sandwich method, where you place two wefts back to back around a section of natural hair for extra hold, add 10 wefts to every count on that list, since you’re using two pieces per section instead of one. Just a quick side note: no matter how many wefts you use, they’ll slip 2-3 weeks early if your client is over-washing or using oil-based products right at the root, which is why we put together that guide on washing tape-in extensions for you to share with clients post-install. It saves you so many follow-up troubleshooting texts.

Quick answers to the questions we get every week

Can I just use one pack for every client to save money?

You technically can, but you’ll end up losing money long term. A single pack on thick or medium hair looks stringy, like you scattered a few random strands of extra hair instead of doing a full, blended install. We’ve had stylists tell us they tried this to cut upfront costs, and nearly half of those clients came back asking for a refund or additional wefts within a week, which ends up costing way more than just ordering the right count up front.

What if I order too many wefts?

As long as you don’t peel the protective tape backing off, unused wefts are fully usable for your next matching client. We don’t accept returns on opened packs, for obvious hygiene reasons, but unopened wefts have a shelf life of years if stored correctly. If you end up with a random half pack of a less common shade, you can use those pieces for highlight pops or spot coverage for clients with small thin spots around their part, so they almost never go to waste.

Do I need extra wefts for curly tape-ins?

Yep, plan for 10 extra wefts per install if you’re using curly or kinky curly textures. Curly hair compresses more when it’s hung straight for weighing during production, so the actual installed volume is a little lower than straight hair at the same gram weight. That extra 25g makes up for that compression so the blend looks even, with no flat spots around the crown.

Don’t overcomplicate this. You don’t need a fancy calculator or a certification to get the count right. Measure that ponytail, ask if the client wants thickness only or real length, and keep a few backup wefts on hand so you never get stuck mid-install. If you’re still unsure about count for a specific client, you can always shoot our team a note with their hair length, texture, and end goal, and we’ll help you nail the number before you check out. You can browse every length, shade, and texture we carry when you shop all hair extensions, and all in-stock orders ship out within 2 business days so you don’t have to keep clients waiting weeks for their install.
