How to Fold Weft Extensions to Prevent Tangling During Storage
Fold weft extensions in loose accordion sections along the stitched track, tie the middle softly, and lay the bundle flat in a breathable bag. This keeps cuticles—the tiny overlapping scales on each strand—running one direction so hair doesn’t rub into tangles on the shelf. It’s the same method we use in our warehouse.
Why the fold beats a fancy storage bag
A weft is hair sewn onto a stitched track, and that track gives you a clean folding line. Rolling from the ends twists hair against itself, so cuticles catch and tangle before the bag even matters. Most unpacking tangles we see aren’t factory damage; they’re friction from bundles stuffed into tight drawers. If you’re storing raw hair bundles long term, leave extra room; raw hair is unprocessed, and its intact cuticles matte faster when crushed.
How do you fold weft extensions without tangles?
Hold the top track with both hands about eight inches apart. Fold one side across in a soft loop, then reverse direction like closing an accordion. Keep folds four to six inches wide; a 22-inch bundle takes about four, and 28 to 30 inches takes five or six. This suits most weft hair textures we ship; tie a satin scrunchie loosely around the middle and slide it into a dust bag.
What about long lengths and curly hair?
For 26 inches and up, use four-inch folds so the track isn’t pulled into deep bends. Support long bundles with a cardboard insert if you stack bins, and never let the top hang over the edge. Curly hair must be fully dry first; dampness at a fold line causes matting fast, especially in humidity. Keep curly bundles on top of stacks, because flattened curls lock together and take real work to reopen.
Mistakes that cause matting on the shelf
- Rolling from the ends instead of folding along the track.
- Using rubber bands or tight elastics that grip hair and crease it.
- Sealing wefts in plastic for weeks, trapping heat and moisture.
- Stacking ten-plus bundles until bottom folds flatten and knot.
- Mixing straight and curly hair in one open bag.
- Hanging wefts by the tie for weeks, stretching the track.
How long can folded wefts stay stored?
A dry, loosely folded weft can sit in breathable storage for six to eight weeks without issues. After that, open and refold bundles once a month, especially in humid salon closets. When moving inventory, don’t overpack the box; our guide to shipping hair extensions covers the setup. Write the receive date on the bag so older bundles get installed first instead of sitting at the back.
Should I fold wefts while they’re still damp?
No. Let hair air dry fully on a rack first, because moisture trapped in a fold causes the fastest matting we see. If hair returns damp, wash and dry it before it goes back into inventory.
Do machine and hand-tied wefts fold the same way?
Mostly, but hand-tied wefts are thinner and shouldn’t press against a hard bin. Use the same accordion fold, skip cardboard, and stack them no more than three high. More care and lead-time details are on our FAQ page.
When you restock, shop all hair extensions with enough shelf space to fold each bundle loosely.
