Bulk Hair From China: What International Buyers Should Know

Bulk Hair From China: What International Buyers Should Know

We’ve spent 12 years shipping bulk hair from China out of our Guangzhou warehouse, fixing last-minute mix-ups for salon owners and brand builders across the US, and watching new buyers make the same avoidable mistakes over and over.

Most of what you read online about sourcing from China is either fear-mongering about terrible quality or overhyped sales copy from suppliers who’ve never actually touched a bundle of hair. This post is the straight stuff: what actually moves the needle on cost, quality, and lead time, no fluff.

Bulk hair from China comes in 3 real quality tiers (not the marketing jargon)

A lot of new buyers reach out thinking “100% virgin human hair” is a single universal standard, but it’s not. We quote three distinct tiers every week, and the price difference between the top and bottom is almost 70% per 100g bundle. The lowest tier is usually 40-50% synthetic or animal hair mixed in, dyed to match common color rings, priced around $18-$25 per 100g 18-inch bundle. It tangles after two washes, and we never recommend it for salon clients who expect more than a week of wear.

The middle tier is 80-90% human hair, mostly collected from salon sweepings and processed to strip cuticles, priced $32-$45 per 100g; it holds up for 4-6 weeks of wear, works for pop-up shops or budget clientele, but don’t try to lift it more than two levels or it will turn to mush. The top tier is cuticle-aligned Remy hair, collected directly from donors with zero acid processing, priced $55-$75 per 100g depending on length, and it will last 6+ months with proper care.

If you’re browsing bulk hair for braiding or custom branded bundles, those price ranges should line up with any legitimate quote you get. If a supplier quotes you cuticle-aligned hair for $20 a bundle, run. Don’t walk. The most common bait-and-switch we see is suppliers sending a top-tier sample to win your business, then shipping middle or low-tier hair for your full order because they assume you won’t check every bundle before stocking it.

MOQs aren’t set in stone (but there’s a catch)

A lot of first-time buyers assume every factory requires 100kg minimum orders, but that’s only true if you want fully custom packaging or a custom color formula no one else stocks. For standard colors and lengths, most reputable suppliers will do MOQs as low as 500g per length/color combo for first orders, which works out to 5 bundles—totally doable for a small salon or solo braider building stock.

The catch? If you go below that 500g threshold, you’ll pay a 15-20% surcharge, because pulling small batches slows down the warehouse line and means we can’t buy raw hair in bulk for your order. We walk through specific negotiation tips for small order minimums in our guide to buying bulk hair direct, but the short version is: don’t lie about being a huge brand to get a lower price, because we’ll see it when your first order comes in at 3 bundles, and it will erode trust fast.

Small orders under 2kg total almost always ship via express air, which can add $60-$100 in shipping costs, so it’s often cheaper to bump your order up to hit that 2kg threshold even if you hold a few extra bundles in stock for a month.

Lead times are never as fast as suppliers say (here’s what to plan for)

Every supplier will tell you their lead time is 3-5 days, but that’s only for in-stock, uncustomized orders pulled straight from warehouse shelves. If you need custom color matching, custom wefting, or branded packaging, add 7-10 business days to that number minimum. During peak season—May through July, when everyone is stocking up for back-to-school and wedding season, plus late November before holiday rushes—add another 3-5 days, because factory lines are backed up and express couriers get swamped.

We once had a buyer book a pop-up 8 days after placing an order for custom colored weft hair extensions, and even with rushing the production, it missed the event by 2 days because customs held the parcel for an extra inspection. Don’t forget that US customs can randomly pull parcels for inspection, which adds 2-7 days with zero warning, no matter what shipping service you pay for.

If you’re ordering for a specific event or launch, build in 2 full weeks of buffer time, minimum. It’s better to have hair sitting on your shelf a week early than to text 30 clients rescheduling because your order is stuck in Alaska at a customs hub.

The hidden costs almost no one quotes up front

Most quotes you get will only list the per-bundle hair cost, but there are three line items that can add 25-35% to your total invoice if you don’t ask about them first:

  • Shipping: Air express for 10kg of hair from Guangzhou to most US addresses runs $180-$260, depending on fuel surcharges. Sea freight is cheaper for orders over 100kg, but takes 35-45 days door to door.
  • Payment processing fees: Cross-border wire transfers, PayPal, and credit card payments all carry 2.9% to 4.5% fees, and many suppliers pass those directly to the buyer instead of building them into the quoted price.
  • Custom branding add-ons: Custom tags, satin bags, and printed boxes usually add $1.20-$2.75 per bundle, plus a one-time $50-$100 plate set-up fee for printed logos.

If you’re building your own private label line, our guide for new hair brands breaks down more of those often-missed costs, but even if you’re just ordering stock for your salon chair, ask for an all-in total before you send payment, not just the per-bundle rate.

Quick answers to the questions we get every single week

Will I get hit with customs duties on my order?

For most orders under $800 shipped to the US, you won’t owe extra duties under the de minimis rule, which is a huge win for small buyers. Orders over that threshold usually carry 8-12% of the declared value in duties and processing fees. A lot of suppliers offer to mark parcel values lower to skip fees, but if customs catches an undervalued package, they can hold it indefinitely or issue steep penalties. We never mark parcels more than 20% below actual value; it’s not worth the risk for either of us.

How do I avoid getting scammed with bad quality hair?

First, skip suppliers who flood your DMs with 10 follow-up messages an hour after you request a quote—those are almost always trading companies, not factories, marking up random, untested hair with zero QC. Second, order a single-bundle sample first, and test it hard: wash it three times, heat style it, check for tangling and shedding. If the sample is perfect, ask your supplier to keep a 10g clipping on file to match your full order, so they can’t swap in lower quality stock. Third, pay via a method with buyer protection for first orders; wire transfers work once you have a track record, but don’t send thousands to a new social media contact. We cover more of these red flags, plus return policies, on our frequently asked questions page.

What’s the biggest mistake new buyers make?

Honestly? Ordering too much of the wrong length or color because they got excited about wholesale prices. We see it every month: a new buyer grabs 20 bundles of 30-inch platinum because the per-bundle price is great, then realizes their client base mostly asks for 18-22 inch natural brown, leaving them stuck with $1,200 of slow-moving inventory. Start small, test what your clients actually book, then scale up. It’s not a deal if you can’t sell the product.

At the end of the day, sourcing bulk hair from China isn’t some complicated, high-stakes gamble if you go in with clear expectations, ask the right questions, and build a relationship with a supplier who will be honest about lead times and quality tiers instead of telling you what you want to hear. If you’re ready to put together your first test order, you can browse our current stock to see available lengths and colors, or shoot our team a note with your specific needs and we’ll send a transparent, all-in quote with no hidden fees.
