Frontal Wig Installation Tips: Pros, Cons & Care Tips

A frontal wig installation looks most natural when the ear-to-ear lace is tinted, secured, lightly plucked, and matched to the client; the tradeoff is more maintenance than a closure wig. A frontal is wide ear-to-ear lace at the front, while a closure covers only a smaller top section. Here’s what we tell salons and vendors before they install or stock one.

What do I need for a frontal wig install?

Start with the unit: a 13×4 frontal wig has lace about 13 inches across and 4 inches back, allowing deeper parts than a closure. Most adult clients take a 22.5-inch medium cap, and adjustable straps or an elastic band make glueless wear safer. Keep lace tint, a small brush, needle and thread, adhesive or tape, alcohol, and baby-hair products at the station. A 150% density wig—density is hair fullness relative to the base—will be lighter than an 180% unit. Inspect knots and parting before the client arrives, because flaws are hard to hide after glue is applied.

Are frontal wigs worth it? The honest pros and cons

The main upside is versatility: a good frontal mimics a real scalp, supports deep parts and ponytails, and protects natural hair. That lets a salon charge for a fuller service than a basic closure install. The downsides are real: visible glue, thick knots, or over-plucked lace can ruin the look, and some clients react to adhesive. Sweat, oil, or swimming can shorten a two-week hold to a few days. For low-maintenance clients, traditional weft hair in a simple sew-in may be the better choice.

Should I glue it, sew it, or use a glueless frontal install?

Glue gives the flattest hairline and usually holds one to two weeks, but it can irritate skin or tear lace during rushed removal. A glueless cap with elastic, combs, and temple tape is safer for sensitive clients and easier to change weekly. It can still lift if the cap is loose, so measure the circumference first. Never apply adhesive to damaged or tight braided edges, and do a patch test 24 hours beforehand. Offer both methods instead of promising one answer for every client.

How long does a frontal wig installation take and last?

After braiding or wrapping the client’s hair, a clean install usually takes 1.5 to 2.5 hours; plucking, knot bleaching, and styling can push it to three. Glue normally lasts one to two weeks, while a glueless or sewn-in fit can be refreshed weekly or worn two to three weeks. Good human hair can last one to two years, but the lace may need repair sooner. Stock units often ship in three to seven days, while custom density or packaging takes two to three weeks. Build that buffer in for bridal or vacation orders instead of rush-shipping an uninspected unit.

How do you care for a frontal wig after installation?

Clients should wrap the hairline nightly with a silk or satin scarf; friction lifts lace and frizzes baby hairs faster than anything. Clean under the edge weekly, dissolve old residue with proper remover, and never pick at the lace. Wash in lukewarm water with sulfate-free shampoo, condition the mid-lengths and ends, and air dry instead of soaking the knots. Rinse chlorine or salt out the same day and expect a bond touch-up after swimming. Frontal wig FAQ

Can I shower or swim with a frontal wig?

Showering is fine with a shower cap, but keep hot steam away from the adhesive. Swimming can work with a waterproof bond, but chlorine and salt loosen lace and dry hair. Rinse right after and expect a touch-up, not a fresh install.

How do I stop frontal edges from lifting?

Make sure the skin is clean, dry, and oil-free before applying tape or glue. Tighten the elastic or add a small temple tape piece instead of layering glue over residue. If lifting continues, the cap may be too large, so switch sizes or use a glueless fit.
