Understanding What Is a U Part Wig: What Buyers Should Know
A U part wig is a cap wig with a U-shaped top opening that lets you pull out a strip of your own hair to cover the edge. The leave-out does the blending, so there’s no lace, glue, or frontal fitting.
What is a U part wig made of?
Most U part wigs use a mesh or dome cap, with human-hair wefts sewn on in rows. Wefts are horizontal hair tracks stitched at the top; weft hair is the same material on a cap. The opening runs about 2×4 to 4×4 inches, cut in a U along the crown or side. Straps and combs inside hold it to the scalp, so no adhesive is needed. Leave-out comes through, covers the seam, and makes the part look like her own.
How is a U part wig different from a closure or frontal?
A closure is a small lace or silk patch, usually 4×4 inches, that finishes a sew-in with no leave-out. A frontal is an ear-to-ear lace strip; a U part has no lace at the hairline, just an opening for real hair. Fitting takes five to ten minutes once leave-out is styled, with no lace tinting or glue. The catch: her leave-out must match the texture, which is hard with relaxed, color-treated, or much shorter hair. Daily heat on that strip can cause breakage.
How many bundles and what density should I order?
A finished U part unit usually takes 2.5 to 3.5 bundles, depending on length. Expect 150–180 grams at 10–14 inches, 180–250 at 16–22, and 250-plus past 24 or the ends thin. Density is how much hair is packed into the cap; 150 percent is everyday fullness, 180 percent is noticeably fuller. Coarser curls expand visually and need less weight, while straight hair shows gaps sooner. Stuck on patterns? Our body wave vs deep wave notes cover the styling differences.
Who actually buys these?
- Salon clients wanting a quick install without glue or lace upkeep—the easiest sell.
- Stylists after a premium ticket without the three-hour sew-in.
- Clients with matching, healthy leave-out; otherwise blending fails.
- Scalp-sensitive clients, since it clips in and comes off daily.
- Not for updos or an exposed hairline—the leave-out strip limits styling.
- Not for zero-maintenance clients; the leave-out still needs moisture and heat care.
- Most returns are color match, not cap size, so use salon-light photos.
What should buyers watch out for on wholesale orders?
Virgin hair is unprocessed with cuticles intact; Remy keeps cuticles aligned one way but may be lightly processed. Cuticle aligned hair means all the outer scales face one way, which prevents tangling. Cheap units may mix dropped-cuticle hair in back, missed until the first wash. Ask for weight per cap, opening size, and strap specs on every PO. MOQs run 10 to 50 pieces per length: 7 to 15 days for stock, 3 to 4 weeks for custom labels; our how to start a hair business guide covers reorder math.
Buyer FAQ
Can a customer wear one with no leave-out?
Technically yes, but the gap won’t look like a natural part unless covered. Some clients fill it with clip-ins or shift the opening, but that’s a workaround. For no leave-out, steer her to a closure wig.
How long does a U part wig last?
Cuticle-aligned human hair lasts one to two years with normal care, longer if she doesn’t sleep in it. Synthetic or mixed hair mattes in weeks, so don’t sell it as premium. Straps and combs usually fail first, and a seamstress can replace them cheaply.
Once you pin down opening size, density, and leave-out match, sampling one unit per length tests demand cheaply. Browse shop all hair extensions or send specs through the FAQ page, and we’ll help with a first order.
